Now if you think you will be able to access state criminal records for free, well you are right, but even though there is no money price, there is a time price. You see if you are to go through the state criminal records you will be searching for a long time. Especially if you are trying to do a criminal background check. This is one of the hardest ways to do a background check. Here is why.
First, if you want to find out the complete criminal history on someone you will need more than just one set of state records. There are 50 states that will need to be searched and each will take you well over a few hours of time. This makes a background check cost you nearly 100 hours of time and even at minimum wage that is very pricey. However, this is the only real free way to check someone's criminal history.
Now to throw a wrench into the entire system and let's just say that your potential criminal has used an alias in the past. This will double, maybe even triple your time looking, and it is not uncommon at all. Criminals are known for using multiple names and are also very good at stealing identities. This makes your criminal check not so accurate and that could be dangerous if you are hiring the individual.
There is a better way, but it will cost you a few dollars. You can do one of two things. You can either hire a private investigator. This is only recommended if you need more personal information than what is stored in the public files. Two, you can access a criminal background check database right online.
The online database will allow you to search both the state criminal records and the federal records and will not take nearly as many hours as doing the search for free on your own. It is not that expensive for the peace of mind you will gain with hiring someone new.
